Day 19 - The Discipline of Hearing God

Scripture:
"Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light: and what ever you hear in the ear preach on the housetop." - Matthew 10:27

Having a wrong attitude during seasons of darkness can rob us of their hidden benefits. Contrary to our belief God desires to speak to us in times of darkness. Yes, he does speak in those dark days of the soul. We, however, are usually being so noisy with our complaining about it that we fail to hear him. Jesus told his disciples to declare in the light what they have heard in the dark. Therefore, we must recognize that there are going to be those dark times of the soul in our Christian experience.

Contradictory to what we normally think, periods of darkness are good times for us. For in these dark times God speaks. If we become insensitive, we will not hear him, and if we fail to hear him we will be useless in the light. God’s purpose for dark times is to impart to us his message, that we in turn deliver to others in the light. If I fail to listen in the dark, I will be unprepared in the light.

We need to change in our opinion about dark times. We need to welcome them as God ordained and God designed. A time that if we listen more carefully we will hear that God is speaking clearly. As a result we can deliver his message to others.

How unfortunate it is that many of us have use the seasons of darkness to exercise unholy behavior. Times of darkness have tempted us to exercise sin. In times of darkness we have acted fleshy or have harbored unrighteous attitudes. Let us awake to what God is really doing. He has something to impart, will you be able to hear it? Or will you only hear your own tearful complaints?

Quiet my heart, O Lord,
That I might hear you in a dark hour
And broadcast your message
In the light of a new day with power.
