Day 29 - Fringe Benefits?

Scripture:
"So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do." - Luke17:10

Many of us are guilty of falling into the trap of seeking fulfillment from kingdom duties rather than seeking to fulfill kingdom duties. Somehow we have slipped into thinking that doing the will of God will always give us a sense of self fulfillment. But is that always the case? Is God interested in our sense of fulfillment? Perhaps he is, but I believe he is far more interested in our fulfilling our assignments than our feeling fulfilled in doing them.

Just supposed with me for a moment that God had an assignment for you to accomplish that rewarded you little in feelings of self fulfillment. Would you begin to question the assignment? Would you begin to question whether you had heard the instructions properly? Would you soon lose heart and contemplate desertion? Or would you have the faith and resolve to finish your God given mandate no matter what you received from it personally?

Is the criteria for a God ordained mission the gratification of a sense of fulfillment? The scripture today speaks of being and unprofitable servant. How many in ministry today are profitable servants? Servants who are in it for the benefits and personal rewards? And how many are unprofitable servants? Those who faithfully serve their master whether they receive personal benefit (profit) from it or not.

What if God’s mission for you today was not a self satisfying one? Would you do it? What if everyday was a drudgery? Would you still fulfill you assignment? Jesus described an attitude that the true disciple of Christ must manifest. An unprofitable servant’s attitude. The unprofitable servant doesn’t obey God with a "what’s in it for me" kind of attitude. He faithfully finishes his course saying when he has finished ".....We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do."

Any time you are tempted to complain about your duty assignment in the kingdom ask your self this solemn questions. Am I striving to obediently fulfill my mission or am I striving for fulfillment in my mission? Your mission is to fulfill your God given duty and not to struggle for fulfillment in doing it. You may find yourself feeling self fulfillment in doing God’s will but it isn’t always a fringe benefit.

Have you reminded yourself today that you are an unprofitable servant in the kingdom of your God? Perhaps you should.
