Devotions Today from Isaiah
sabbatical

8 Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts. 9 My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you. When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.

Isaiah 26:8-9
Waiting For God

I hate waiting whether it is a traffic light or a check-out line in the supermarket. A few years ago I lived in a town where the traffic lights were set to stop you at every block to three minutes - I timed them! It seemed that town manager had the idea that to keep people from speeding you needed to stop them at every traffic light through the whole town. I found that terribly annoying so much so that I found alternate back street detours to get around waiting.

Everything about waiting irritates me. I am a "get-it-done" kind of person. I have things to do, people to see, and places to go. So when God says "WAIT UPON THE LORD" everything in me says, "How long?" I am hyperactive, type-A personality, and probably a little ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactive Disorder). Unfortunately, or fortunately, God doesn't make any exceptions about this based on your personality. He says, "WAIT ON THE LORD. WAIT PATIENTLY FOR THE LORD." I have a friend that stated it so succinctly. He said, "God is never late, but then he is never early either."

There is value in waiting. God has some things to do in us that cannot be done except in "God's waiting room." It is the waiting, not the arriving that He values.
