It has been my privilege to officiate dozens of weddings in my 35 year ministry.
One of the funniest, and thus the most memorable, was not one I conducted but one in which I was a minor participant.
At the rehearsal I normally instruct the men in the wedding party to be aware that when they stand at attention at the
front of the sanctuary that they be careful to keep from standing at rigid attention like a soldier. I instruct them to
put their hands crossed in front of them (to avoid hands in pockets) and to keep their knees loose, to keep from cutting
off circulation.
In this wedding I was not officiating, so I did not have the chance to coach the young men on that. During the wedding I
was seated in the sanctuary near the front enjoying the service and observing the events. I noticed that one certain young
man was standing rather stiffly. Soon there was just the slightest wobble, then suddenly, without warning, he began to faint.
Now, he did not faint in the normal fashion of going limp and collapsing. No, he went over like a rigid board, still standing
at attention and did not wake up until his head his the carpet. It was hilarious and even funnier when we played back the
video, over and over, watching him faint and fall. As an aside, I have never had a woman faint in any wedding. Only the men,
and usually the youngest and strongest.
Many of us mach-men believe fainting is for sissys. Yet it is true that in Basic Training, boot camp, men standing at attention
for long periods of time will faint. As with the wedding, it is not usually the puniest, but the strong, tall, strong burley
ones who succumb to fainting. Perhaps it is because they are so strong and intent that they cut off circulation and fall.
God observed fainting too and in this passage He wants us to be sure to know that he doesn't faint. He doesn't get weary.
He doesn't get tired and he doesn't wear out. God is not a man, nor is He like a man. HE DOES NOT FAINT.
