Devotions Today from the Psalms

Psalm 8 - NKJV
1 O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens!

2 Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.

3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, 4 What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? 5 For You have made him a little lower than the angels,[b] And You have crowned him with glory and honor.

6 You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, 7 All sheep and oxen— Even the beasts of the field, 8 The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas.

9 O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!

To the Chief Musician. On the instrument of Gath.[a] A Psalm of David.

You Are Not God

Wow! What a revelation! I am not God? Is that profound, or what? Where'd that come from? David begins with THE NAME OF THE LORD. What a name! There are more than 640 names for the Lord revealed in Scripture. These are not just nice nicknames, but definitions of God's character and work. The study, meditation, exaltation, and prayer in and to his name are ways we get to know God better. Do you know him like David knew him? David spent years beholding the Lord, inquiriing in his temple, seeking the Lord, and calling on the Lord. You don't get to know God in three easy lessons. It is a lifelong pursuit of God that brings us into a full, deep, and intimate relationship to him. How many of God's character names can you list from memory right now?

David used another expression in this Psalm, an expression about man. He was putting his puny little work and worth into the perspective of a Great, Big, Wonderful God. What is man that you are mindful of him, or the son of man that you visit him? The answer is simple. Man is little more than nothing compared to the awesomeness of God. We are little better than the animals God created. But we are better because God says so. He has exalted us above the animals. He has crowned us with glory and honor - that is, he gives us our worth. We don't have worth in and of ourselves, but he crowns us with value. He exalts us.

Let us learn from David. God, and God alone, should be the focus of our attention and praise.
