A theme here is "contend for me, O Lord" v. 1, 23 Shield and Buckler (note comments on this)
Spear and Javelin -
interesting, not sword as Ephesians 6. "The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" If the Word is our sword, what is our spear and javelin? I have no answer yet, but it is good to think about.
David often refers to the Lord as his defender - Rock, Fortress, Pavillion, High Tower, Hiding Place, Refuge, etc. But here he uses some more active weapons. God is asked to go beyond defense to offence. 'Contend for me, O God.'
Enter spear and javelin - they are not our weapons, but God's. Both are thrown from afar. A sword is ours to use in hand-to-hand combat against the lying assaults of Satan. See Ps. 34:7 The angel of the Lord encamps round about…and delivers not just defend, but delivers.
"When the enemy comes in like a flood the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a Standard against him" Isaiah
