David was sick. We are not told what the sickness was, but it must have been pretty bad. His enemies rejoiced in his sickness. He was bed-ridden. He speaks of his sickbed (v7) And bed of illness. He calls it a vile disease that beset him. His enemies imagine and laugh. "He cries to the Lord for healing, and to preserve his life. He says, 'have mercy On me, and raise me up." (v.10)
Thank for a moment of the worst sickness you have ever faced. How did you feel? What happened? How long did it last? Did the Lord raise you up? Are you better now? Are you still bed-ridden?
There is hope and help here for all of us. If you have been sick at some time…mumps, measles, chickenpox, appendicitis, tonsillitis, mononucleosis, bronchitis, pneumonia, a bad case of the flu - whatever, God has heard your cry. He raise you up! He can do so again.
If you are now facing a debilitating illness, you are not alone. David faced one also. But God had mercy on him and raised him up.
One of these things will happen: 1) You will eventually get better; 2) You will not get better but will have to live with the illness or; 3) You'll die from it. Not much more than that can be expected What? Most likely this trouble too will pass.
I like verse 12, "Set me in your presence forever." That is ultimately the destiny of all of us. Someday a debilitating illness or injury will put us down for the last time. You will die of something - everyone does.
God alone holds that key. The devil doesn't. God knows the day of our birth and the day, even the moment of our death. We are completely in his hands. He will either sustain you (vs.3) or take you home to heaven. So, stop worrying about it. Just cry to the Lord as you have in all your sicknesses. He will either sustain you, heal you or take you home. Whichever, you are still in his loving care.
