We recommend that if you have children in your home that you read daily one story from Ken Taylor's "The Book." Ken Taylor is the translator of the Living Bible. He did that while commuting by train to and from work so that his children would understand the Scriptures. The children are a little ahead of us this week. They will be reading 2 Chronicles for the most part. This is due to the repetative nature of Kings and Chronicles. Monday - 113. The End of the Kingdom 2 Kings 14, 15 Tuesday - 114. The Little Kingdom of Judah 1 Kings 14-15 Wednesday - 115. God Helps a Good King 2 Chron 18-20 Thursday - 116. God Makes a Bad King Sick 2 Chron 21-22 Friday - 117. A Little Boy Becomes a King 2 Chron 23-24 Saturday - 118. God's Temple is Robbed 2 Chron 24-25 Sunday - 119. Isaiah Tells the Future 2 Chron 26 Commentary on 1 Chronicles: "Boring!!!" Is probably the response of most people to the reading of Chronicles. It is about as interesting as roll call of a thousand men. Much of Chronicles is genealogy, that is, lists of family descendants, and rolls. It may not mean much to us but to the Israelites knowing your ancestry gave you a feeling of significance. To most Jews it was exciting to read the roll call and see their own family members names. If yo have ever done any genealogical studies in libraries you know what it is like to w ad through volumes of material to find that rare instance of your family name; even more exciting when there is a commentary about your ancestor. The Books of Chronicles are not the lost books of Chronicles mentioned in the books of the Kings. Those books have not been found. The Chronicles here in Jewish tradition were the last books of the Hebrew Bible and compiled after the exile, probably by Ezra. Placing these books at the end of the Old Testament would be less confusing for us, and would help us have a clearer picture of the chronology of events of the Old Testament. The Hebrew name of the books is "The Words of the Days." (Kind of like "Days of Our Lives") Jerome, the famous Latin Bible translator gave these books the English title Chronicles. As you read through 1 Chronicles don't try to read and pronounce all the names. Speed read or skim the listings for significant names and commentaries on individuals. Any commentary on an individual is significant. God intended it to be a spotlight on a few outstanding individuals. Many sermons have been written on little comments next to an obscure name in a genealogy. Remember, boring as it may be, all Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is PROFITABLE. Questions to Ponder: (Things that make you go...hmmm?) What ever happened to the ark of the covenant? What happened to the 12 Tribes of Israel?
