God's Presence
7.Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8.If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9.If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10. even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. 11.If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," 12. even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. Psalm 139:1-24 Intro: (ie) Toilet paper illustration - you cannot hide from God. He is ever present, ever watching. We have been studying God - To know God is the chief end of man. God has revealed himself and desires to be known. Yet man has distorted the image of God into what he is not, either to four footed beasts and idols, or by distorting his nature and character to be like a man, sinful and fallible. We have considered: God's Existence, God's Omnipotence, God's Goodness, God's Faithfulness. This morning we look at "God's Presence." In theology, the study of God, we refer to this attribute of God as His Omnipresence - that is his pervasive presence in all of his creation. The Scriptures are abundant in reference and detail regarding God's presence. God is invisible but everywhere, on all sides, he inhabits space and time, no where can we be removed from his presence. No passage depicts the truth of God's presence more profoundly than David the psalmist expressed it in Psalm 139. Consider Five Truths About the Presence of God
1. God is ever present, - He is always, everywhere, in all things. (ie) Room w/o light (ie) oxygen, ever present. (ie) burned popcorn, toast - smell stays with you, permiates everything. 2. God's presence is invisible- It is silent, unassuming, still (ie) Mr Harvey T Winkles, principal. Elijah and the voice of the Lord - still small voice. "but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: 12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 1 Kings 19:11-12 3. God's presence can be avoided - It can be quenched, grieved, run from. Though his presence is actually there it is undetected, un-experienced. (ie) Jacob's Dream of the Ladder - Genesis 28:16 (ie) Jonah ran from the presence of the Lord (ie) Saul who knew the anointing of God - lost His presence "He answers me not by urim and thumin or dreams." (ie) David committed adultery with Bathsheba and lost the joy of His salvation, presence of God, free spirit of God, Psalms 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 4. God's presence is promised to us! Emmanuel: God is with us! I will never leave you nor forsake you. Some day his presence will be complete (for we know in part and we prophesy in part). We will one day be presented faultless before His presence, accepted, forgiven. It can be found (seek me while I may be found) or intensified (a very present help in trouble, or overwhelming (in thy presence is fullness of joy). We can either wait for his presence, seek his presence, joy in his presence or hinder his presence. (ie) The canary in the mine - sensitive to environment, toxins, and will quickly die in the presence of nocuous gases. 5. God's presence can be withdrawn - or completely removed. King's presence - either cast out of His presence. Many believers already know that there is an "unpardonable sin." - that moment when a man so rejects the Spirit of God that he attributes the work of the Spirit to the devil and light becomes darkness and darkness light. Good appears evil, and evil good. The Spirit of God will not always strive with men. Today if you hear his voice harden not your heart! (ie.) Judas Isacariot Hell shall remove from God's presence. - 2 Thessalonians 1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; Revelation 14:10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: Psalms 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Genesis 3:8 - Adam hid from the presence of the Lord. Genesis 28:16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not. Exodus - The Presence went before them in a cloud and pillar of fire. Exodus 33:14 And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. Exodus 33:15 And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence. Jonah 1:3 - sought to hide from the presence. Job 1:12 - So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. Psalms 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 1 Corinthians 1:29 That no flesh should glory in his presence. Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; Psalms 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. End times shall call for rocks to fall on them to hide from His presence. Hell shall remove from God's presence. - 2 Thessalonians 1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; Conclusion: Are you hiding from God? Have you lost the sense of God's presence? God invites you back into His presence where there is fullness of joy. NIV Psalms 139:1-24 1. O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. 2. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. 5. You hem me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. 6. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. 7. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8. If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10. even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. 11. If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," 12. even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. 13. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. 14. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, 16. your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. 17. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18. Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you. 19. If only you would slay the wicked, O God! Away from me, you bloodthirsty men! 20. They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name. 21. Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD, and abhor those who rise up against you? 22. I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies. 23. Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
